Spatial Design

Interior and spatial narrative for retail, hospitality, exhibition and workplace — environments that carry a brand rather than merely house it.

InteriorDecorationRetailExhibition

What this is

The design of the physical places a brand occupies: a shop, a restaurant, a stand at an exhibition, a workplace someone walks into on a first day.

The distinction from decoration is intent. Decoration makes a room look considered. Spatial design decides what the room is arguing, and then arranges the space so a person arrives at that conclusion without being told it.

Space as a sequence

A room is experienced in time, not all at once. That makes it closer to editing than to layout.

What does someone see from the door? What does that promise? Where do they slow down, and is the thing worth slowing down for actually there? Where does the space give them permission to stay — because a person who stays is a person who is having a brand experience, and a person who is efficiently processed is having a transaction.

Retail gets this wrong most often by optimising for throughput and then wondering why nobody remembers the visit.

Where the identity gets tested

A brand book survives on screen. It is much harder to survive a wall.

Type at architectural scale behaves differently than type on a page. Colour under real lighting is not the colour in the file. Materials introduce a property the identity never had to consider: how something feels when touched, and how it ages after a thousand people have touched it.

Running identity and spatial work together is usually better for both, and the spatial constraints tend to make the identity stronger rather than weaker.

Exhibition and stands

A stand is the hardest version of this problem: a temporary space, competing with dozens of others, seen mostly in peripheral vision by people walking past with somewhere else to be. It rewards one clear decision and punishes a collection of good ideas.

Status

Spatial Design is an active capability. The published case studies on this site currently cover campaign, content and identity work — spatial projects appear here once the client has confirmed them, never before.

Common questions

Are you architects?

No, and the distinction matters. KHN works on spatial narrative, interior direction and how a brand behaves in three dimensions. Structural and licensed architectural work is done by qualified partners brought into the project.

Can you work with a space that is already built?

Usually yes. Most retail and hospitality work is exactly that — an existing shell, a fixed footprint, and a brand that has to become legible inside it without knocking anything down.

How does this connect to the identity work?

A space is where an identity is least able to hide. Type at architectural scale, colour under real lighting, and material choices that no brand book anticipated. When both run together, the spatial constraints usually improve the identity.
